The Material Reality
Beautiful, natural — and highly dependent on maintenance.
Western Red Cedar contains natural oils, including
thujaplicins, that contribute to its resistance against
rot, insects and fungal decay. These properties help cedar perform for
decades when the roof is properly designed, installed and maintained.
However, those protective properties do not make cedar maintenance-free.
Rain, ultraviolet exposure and seasonal temperature changes gradually
affect the wood. Repeated wetting and drying can also influence the fibre
structure, while prolonged moisture creates conditions where moss and
biological growth become increasingly important maintenance concerns.
That is why the maintenance schedule matters. A cedar roof in a wetter,
heavily shaded environment can require more frequent attention than a
similar roof exposed to a comparatively drier climate.
In North Vancouver, dense vegetation, prolonged wet periods, roof
orientation and elevation can all influence how quickly a cedar roof
dries after rainfall. Consequently, the same maintenance interval should
not automatically be assumed for every property.
The key principle: moisture management.
Cedar does not fail simply because it gets wet. The bigger concern is
repeated or prolonged moisture exposure combined with inadequate
maintenance, poor drainage, limited drying and biological growth.
